Instead, all computers in the LAN should have ONLY the SBS's IP as the DNS Server and then you would enter the ISP's DNS IP's as forwarders when you run the WHY?  I'm curious to know what is going on here and why that fixes the problem.

I would suggest creating a client connection disk to let the external users connect via VPN and have them connect to Remote Web Workspace. Try "ipconfig /all" in console window and try to compare with the same on other machines where ping "companyweb.domain" is ok.
