This may be related to bug 700492 (although the error message is slightly different they both relate to ipv6 network handling in ntp). Thank you. –Ade Malsasa Akbar Jun 5 at 6:37 1 Note that if you originally installed nethogs v0.8.0 via apt-get or another package manager then this method does not remove so it seems that I don't need dnsmasq, just dnsmasq-base However, the configuration isn't provided with dnsmasq-base, so I installed dnsmasq, just for the config to finish the walkthrough. Reading through it this bug seems to be from the earlier ipv6 days. Source

Since ip-v4-address is already opened, opening 0::ip-v4-address and ff:ff::ipv4-address will fail, because ntpd just strips off the higher bits and uses ip-v4-address instead. This looks like a potential bug/configuration problem with the IP setup of your Ubuntu installation; ::ffff:192.168.1.4 is a ipv4 address that has been mapped to the ipv6 address space. this is the same: Code: sudo aptitude remove dnsmasq+ dnsmasq-base Adv Reply June 7th, 2012 #9 mpd2 View Profile View Forum Posts Private Message First Cup of Ubuntu Join Date Affecting: ntp (Ubuntu) Filed here by: Thomas Schweikle When: 2011-01-05 Confirmed: 2011-01-20 Started work: 2014-11-02 Completed: 2014-11-02 Target Distribution Baltix BOSS Juju Charms Collection Elbuntu Guadalinex Guadalinex Edu Kiwi Linux nUbuntu User contributions on this site are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike 4.0 International License.
So as soon as I killed it, the eth0 connection died. Please could your provide more information about your networking setup; specifically any ipv6 related configuration you may have.
