as long as you're not burning over the rated speed it should be fine (burning faster than rated with a good quality drive works too). 24x is the drive's maximum speed, I can burn CD from iPhoto but not DVD. Is it the superdrive or the DVD-Rs? Then I ran disk utility - all is working fine.
