If you brought a computer from a store or got it straight from the manufacturer, the first user name you create is always an Administrator account. The host I'm trying to connect from is Windows 7 and I have checked that the remote desktop services are started on the XP machine. I was told that you can use Home version to connect to Business/Pro versions, but you can't connect Home version to Home version. Other Windows 7 machines were able to remote to the XP Pro machine in question (among others) just fine. It was actually my Windows 7 machine I was trying to RDP from causing the problem.
